Search the summits was a really fun hobby project and an attempt to solve the real world problem of finding information and beta on the mountains of the world. A problem exacerbated by major search engines being polluted with ads and SEO/click bait sites. Adding to that, search engines have deprioritized older websites which do not conform to new web standards. This means websites with valuable beta can not be easily found or that entirely irrelevant results will appear in your search instead.
By creating a highly focused search engine which exclusively crawled mountain-related websites, my goal was to offer a much better search experience. Unfortunately, other projects have taken precedent and the search engine was too niche to pick up much use. In the end I've made the tough decision to turn it off and focus on my Backroad Status project instead.
Thanks to all who used the site! Here's a few fun facts:
Since the site was created there were over 10,974 searches. The most searched term was waddington accounting for 2.54% of all searches. Image searches accounted for ~20% of all searches! There were 304,159 web pages indexed in the search engine and 636,731 images.
